After play the restaurant will offer a choice of three dinner entrees ranging in price from $12.95 to $16.95, taxes and gratuity extra.

Porky & Rocket's Revenge 2008

June 04, 2008 —

The 2008 version of Porky and Rocket's Revenge is fast approaching. This is a wide open scramble event in memory of 2 great club members and supporters - George "Porky" Mann, and Dale "Rocket" Sander. The June 21 event will include Mixed, Ladies, and Mens Divisions, and each team must meet the handicap formula - only 1 player may have an index under 10, and the team total must exceed 40. Mixed teams must have at least 2 women.

Each team may include one guest provided they can establish an index. Holders of our spring green fee ticket packs are also eligible for this event, with a twilight fee payable. You will want to register your team soon, as this is sure to be a sell-out again this year.

2008 Shier's Better Ball

June 04, 2008 —

The 2008 Shier's Two Man Better Ball will take place Saturday and Sunday, June 7th and 8th. This is a very competitive tournament with a strong field and there should be some great scoring with the course softened by the frequent rain received this season.

Shier's Insurance have been wonderful sponsors of the event for many years, and Adam Shier is continuing that tradition. This year marks the 10th anniversary of John Shier's untimely death, and there will be a special recognition included in the tournament. Spectators are welcome to come out to watch play at the 1st, 9th, 10th and 18th holes.

Early Bird 2008

May 10, 2008 —

The first event of the member's schedule is fast approaching - The Early Bird is on May 24th, sponsored by Muskoka KIA. This is a great kick-off to the season, with 18 holes of stroke play followed by a great buffet dinner and prize presentations. We welcome Paul Erb and Paul Mascarin and Muskoka KIA as sponsors of the event. The registration sheet is in the lounge by the handicap computer. Reminder to green fee package purchasers that they are eligible to enter this event but need to see Ron Webb regarding their handicap factor for the purposes of net scoring.

New Members Social

May 05, 2008 —

A social evening for new golf members will take place Thursday May 8th from 7:00-9:00 pm. Wine & Cheese will be served compliments of the Golf Committee and the Club. If are a new member and wish to attend please contact Teresa at 645-4221 Ext 222.

Golf Season Approaches

April 16, 2008 —

We are pleased to advise that the mountains of snow accumulated this winter have been disappearing quite quickly, all things considered, and the golf course appears to have wintered well. Our greens are in good shape, with a few shady spots still covered by snow.

The property is very wet from the melt, but good progress is evident day to day. We continue to aim for May 6th opening but have our fingers crossed that favourable conditions will allow us to beat that target by a few days.

The first events of the season are rapidly approaching. Juniors & Parents meeting will be Monday May 5 at 7:00 pm. New golf members social will be Thursday May 8th at 7:00 pm, and the first members tournament, as always, is the Early Bird, sponsored by Muskoka KIA, on Saturday May 24th. Stay tuned for further updates, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

2008 Sportsmen's Bonspiel

March 03, 2008 —

The 2008 Sportsmen's Bonspiel will be a special event, as the field will include Skip Thomas Dufour and the Men's Champions of France. Team Dufour will be using the Sportsmen's as part of their preparation for the World Men's Championship playdowns April 5-13 in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

The Sportsmen's always features very competitive curling, but we can't find any record of a national championship team taking part in the past. The bonspiel begins on Friday March 28th, with opening ceremonies at 4:45 and the first draw at 5:00 pm. The 4 Final events will take place Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm. Admisssion is free and the public is welcome.

Strategy Clinic

February 01, 2008 —

The Curling Committee of the club is sponsoring a strategy clinic on Saturday March 8th. David Farnell, the varsity coach at Trent University and Sir Sandford Fleming College will deliver the session, which is expected to run from noon until 3:00 pm. Farnell provides this course and similar sessions for the OCA, throughout central Ontario.

All costs of the session are being paid by the Committee. Space is limited, so register early by signing up on the bulletin board outside the club office.

February Bonspiels

January 25, 2008 —

As February approaches, so do two of the most popular curling bonspiels of the year. On the 8th and 9th 24 teams will vie for the Muskoka Lakes Association Trophy, in our mixed event. Jay Houston is the convenor and may be reached at 645-8783.

Later in the month the Men's Muskoka Lakes takes place from the 21st to 23rd with 32 teams from around the region competing at 5 different clubs. This is a great fellowship event and you are guaranteed to meet some new curlers, and enjoy the facilities and hospitality of other Muskoka curling clubs. Each team should have a new or newer curler. Ted Gardner and Dave Forth look after this event, so contact them to enter your team. Ted can be reached at 645-7383 and Dave is at 645-5014.

Bonspiel Season Has Arrived

January 04, 2008 —

The 2008 bonspiel season swings into action this weekend with the first annual Denise Parise Memorial Bonspiel. 12 teams of ladies will compete for the title in this inaugural event, honouring the memory of a great member and friend.

Two weeks later the Men take to the ice for the Molson's Bonspiel, a one-day, 3-game affair followed by a delicious prime rib dinner.

In February the MLA Mixed is slated for the 8th and 9th, and the Men's Muskoka Lakes follows on the 21st through the 23rd.

If you need inforamtion about our bonspiels, contact the club office at 645-4221, or e-mail to smcgc@on.aibn.com . Good Curling !

New Bonspiel Honours Denise Parise

November 28, 2007 —

The Club's January Ladies bonspiel will no longer be named in memory of BJ Hough, as the family had run the event for many years and felt it was time to step down. We certainly appreciated the support given by Lori and Marge and their friends.

A new committee has been formed under the leadership of Andree Baillargeon, and their first step was to re-name the event in memory of Denise Parise. Denise was a long-time valued club member and friend to all at South Muskoka and she is sorely missed. Husband Gerry was delighted with the suggestion to hold the event in Denise's memory.

The event will be held on Saturday January 5th and is open to non-members. The sign-up sheet is currently in the club lounge. The entry fee of $180 per team includes 2 8-end games, lunch and dinner. Curlers are also to bring a wrapped, re-cycled Christmas gift with a $20 value. There is room on the sign-up sheet for single players to indicate their interest in the event.

Curling Season Begins

October 09, 2007 —

With registration in full swing the 2007-08 curling season is just around the corner. Call the club office for a registration kit or to get information about our leagues.

A series of free clinics is offered beginning Monday October 22nd with sessions in the afternoon and the evening hours. This is a great way to give the game a try before deciding to register for the season, or if you have a little experience, to get some expert instruction and help with your techniques.

Give us a call at 645-4221 Ext 222 for further information.

Final Members Events

September 21, 2007 —

As we head into the fall the members' event schedule is winding down with some great tournaments. First up is the Seniors' Fall Classic on Thursday the 27th. We intend to have both Senior and Super Senior categories for this 18-hole, individual stroke play event. Then Saturday September 29th brings the 2007 Finale - a two-person scramble with categories for men, women, and mixed teams. Full handicaps apply (average of the two players) and all prizes are based on net scores. This event is currently full with a waiting list, but there may be some changes, so call the Pro Shop if you are interested. Year end awards will follow the Finale prize presentation.

For our Juniors, the first annual Ping/Webby Golf Invitational takes place Sunday September 30th and this promises to be a great event. Speak to Mr. Webb to find out more.

Tagwagi & Family Golf Day

August 28, 2007 —

The 2007 Greavette

July 30, 2007 —

As July slips away (where has the time gone??) the next member's event is fast approaching, with the Greavette Mixed Member & Guest on August 10th and 11th. There are no team handicap minimums but all players must have an acceptable handicap index. All teams must be mixed with pairings of opposite genders. This event has a great format with 6 holes of 2 player scramble, 6 of net better ball, and 6 of Chapman-syle alternate shot, for each pair.

In the past we have made some exceptions to the member & guest numbers, so if you don't have two guests available, other members can form part of your team. Contact Ron or Jennifer to check it all out.

Thanks to the Greavette family and companies for their ongoing strong support of this event, and everyone can look forward to 2 days of great golf and a delicious banquet to top it all off . Register now !

Porky's Revenge Grows

June 14, 2007 —

The 2007 Porky's Revenge will take on a new title and purpose when it becomes Porky & Rocket's Revenge. Honouring the memory of George Mann has been the main purpose of the event since inception, and now it will also be held in memory of Dale "The Rocket " Sander.

Both Porky and Rocket were longtime members and tremendous supporters of the Club. Rocket also served for almost 20 years on the Board of Directors and the Greens Committee and was a fixture at Men's Night and club events.

Porky & Rocket's revenge is a flat out scramble with a minimum team handicap requirement (40). There are normally divisions for Men, Ladies and Mixed teams. This year's event is at 1:30 on Saturday June 23rd. Contact the Pro Shop while there is still space for your team.

TGIF - June 8th

Please join us to meet members of the Club Pro Shop, Golf Committee and Board of Directors. Golf Season Approaches

April 08, 2007 —

Although the recent cold weather and snowfall has been a bit of a set-back, the Club expects to open for golf in the normal time frame, and at present we are aiming for Friday May 4th. April rains typically soak certain areas of the property, and the amounts of sun and wind that follow will determine when the course will be ready for normal traffic.

While some golf clubs prefer to open as early as is absolutely possible, at South Muskoka we want the turf in all areas of the course to get a good start on the growing season before being subjected to the stress of daily foot and cart traffic, and cutting. For this reason we sometimes lag a few days behind some courses, but we firmly believe this improves our conditioning throughout the spring and the entire season, and makes the course more enjoyable for all players.

The early indications are that the course wintered well with no areas of significant concern. The four tee decks which were renovated last fall remain to be sodded, however in each location, there are alternate decks available which will be in play from opening day.

The Club is looking forward to a great golf season in 2007. For any information, contact the office at 645-4221 or the Pro Shop at 645-9096, from April 15 on. See you soon!!

Annual Men's Muskoka Lakes Bonspiel

February 06, 2007 —

A popular men's curling bonspiel will take place later this month as the 2007 Men's Muskoka Lakes begins on Thursday February 22nd with games in MacTier, Baysville, Port Carling and Bracebridge. The Bala club joins in the next day and the event continues through Saturday night when the finals of all Divisions are to be played at South Muskoka in Bracebridge.

This bonspiel has a unique flavour as all teams are encouraged to have a new or newer curler on their rink, to introduce them to bonspieling. In addition games are played at the 5 clubs throughout the region, which guarantees that teams will meet players they have rarely, if ever, curled against.

Entry to the event is just $100 per team, and there is still room for last minute registrations, so contact Convenor Ted Gardner at 645-7609 or call the Club at 645-4221.

MLA Mixed Fast Approaching

February 06, 2007 —

The 2007 edition of the Muskoka Lakes Association mixed bonspiel begins this Friday night with games at both South Muskoka and Port Carling curling clubs. The MLA is a great 2 day event spopnsored by the cottagers association and supported by additional sponsors MCS/Capital Environmental, Michalski Neilsen & Associates, and Indianhead Harbour Limited. It is a three game points event with all teams playing 1 game Friday and 2 games on Saturday, leading up to a great buffet dinner, the prize presentation, and windup dance at South Muskoka. Spectators are welcome at both arenas.

Special Dinner Buffet

January 11, 2007 —

The Club will host a special Prime Rib Buffet dinner on Friday January 26th. This event is open to all, whether club members or not.

The staff are preparing a great menu for the night, including delicious prime rib roasts, pacific salmon, and an array of salads and side dishes guaranteed to please the palate. Tea or coffee and a choice of Baked Alaska or Black Forest cake are included, and a nice selection of well-priced wines will be on hand to complement this special meal.

Service will be from 6:30 until 8:00 pm, and seating is limited, so make your reservation early and avoid disappointment. The price is $24.95 with taxes, tip and beverages extra. Children under 12 are $12.95. To reserve, call the club at 645-4221 and choose extension 226.

Molsons Mens Bonspiel Approaches

December 20, 2006 —

Last year's teams have until January 5th to re-claim their spot in the Molsons Bonspiel, slated for Saturday January 20th. Returnees are to contact Dave Thomson to deliver their entry form and payment. After January 5th new entries will be accepted to fill any vacancies in this popular 16-team event.

The Molsons offers three games of fun curling, a great meal and some interesting side competition. In the past some teams have even attempted to sabotage their upcoming competitors by plying them with wine.

Bracebridge Hosts Regional Playdown

December 20, 2006 —

The weekend of January 13th and 14th promises to be an exciting one at South Muskoka as the Club will play host to the Ontario Curling Association's TSC Stores Tankard - the Men's Championship - for Region 3 of the province. Eight teams from 4 Ontario Zones will battle for 2 berths in the Provincial Final to be held in Sarnia mid-February. The provincial champions will represent Ontario at the 2007 Brier in Hamilton this coming March.

The Region 3 playdown promises to be one of the most hotly-contested in the Province, with a strong field that is led by last year's Brier finalist Glenn Howard and his team of Richard Hart, Brent Laing and Craig Saville. Challenging Howard will be veterans Neil Harrison, who won Zone 9, and Axel Larsen, who captured a berth from Zone 12.

5 other strong teams round out the field including Greg Balsdon, Larsen's clubmate from Guelph CC. Balsdon's rink defeated Howard in the preliminary of last year's Ontario Challenge Round, only to lose to him in the event final. Howard then went all the way to the Brier championship game before bowing out to Jean-Michel Menard of Quebec.

The first draw of the event is scheduled for 9:00 am January 13 with the "A" Final that night at 7:00 pm. The final 2 draws will take place on Sunday at 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. Admission to the event is free.

Sunday Brunch & The Hunters Bonspiel

November 01, 2006 —

The first brunch of the winter season is coming soon, on Sunday November 12th. Reminder that there will be a curling clinic held that same day from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Please make your brunch reservations soon, as we expect both seatings will sell out.

Likewise, the first curling bonspiel of the season is fast approaching, as the annual Hunters' Bonspiel will be held on Saturday November 25th. Gather your hunting pals and register by contacting Joe Rutledge at 645-6249. This event features friendly rivalries between various hunt camps from around the region and for many players this day is their only curling of the season. The day includes three 6-end games, a delicious dinner, and a great prize table, so call Joe today.

Curling Season Approaches

September 26, 2006 —

Registration for the 2006-07 curling season is now underway, and registration forms are available at the Club. There are openings in all leagues - Women's , Men's and Mixed. The deadline for "Early Bird" registration and discount is October 7th, and registrations will be received until Thursday October 26th.

There is a series of free clinics for those who wish to try out the game, starting October 23rd.

A new "stick curling" league is in the formative stages with ice times tentatively allocated on Thursday mornings. Stick curling is a great variation of the regular game, and resembles a combination of curling, horseshoes, and shuffle board. For more details contact the club office at 645-4221 or drop in at 10 Golf Course Road.

September Member Events

September 09, 2006 —

The members' schedule in September features some great events, including of course the 36 hole Club Championship tournament on the 16th and 17th. Members are encouraged to enter as foursomes for the first day of play, however in the final round groupings will be by score.

Next is the Junior & Senior, on Monday the 18th and this event always features great team play and cameraderie. Make sure to register early so pairings can be planned.

The Juniors have their Finale on the 25th, and this is followed by the Seniors Fall Classic on Thursday September 28th, a tournament strictly for senior golfers, and likely to have a Super Senior category again this year.

The season winds up with one of our most popular events, The Finale, a handicapped 2 player scramble to be held on Saturday September 30th. Members should register early, and encourage friends and any newer members to join in the fun as well. The Finale is also open to people on the waiting list and to holders of 2006 green fee ticket packs.

Upcoming Tournaments

August 01, 2006 —

August features 2 relatively new events that are bound to appeal to most club members. First up is the Family Golf Tournament on Sunday August 20th where members can bring any familial relation, member or not, to play in a challenging alternate shot stroke play event. And the next weekend, on Saturday August 26th, is the 3rd Annual Par 3 Tourney, sponsored by Webby Golf Inc. This is an unusual event featuring a par three layout designed especially for the event. Rumours abound that the club will make radical changes to the layout to Nelson-proof the event, after Rick Nelson made a habit of reaching the finals in years 1 and 2.

As usual sign up sheets are in the lounge by the handicap computer. For more information, call the Pro Shop at 645-9096.

2006 Greavette

July 31, 2006 —

With mid-summer suddenly upon us, the Greavette Member & Guest event is fast approaching - on Friday August 11 and Saturday August 12. At last count there were still a few openings in the field, so if you haven't entered yet, contact Ron in the Pro Shop ASAP. The Greavette is a great event. There is a relaxed practice round on Friday and a challenging format Saturday that includes 6 holes each of Chapman alternate shot, net better ball, and straight scramble. The delicious South Muskoka roast beef buffet dinner follows, along with prize presentations. See you on the 11th!

Contest ??

July 11, 2006 —

On Sunday July 16th, the club will hold its second annual Mixed Net Better Ball Tournament. This is a great event for couples and friends. Good luck!!

Porky Returns !!

July 07, 2006 —

The Porky's Revenge Scramble returns Saturday July 22nd. There will again be Ladies, Men's and Mixed Divisions in this wide open scramble held in memory of George "Porky" Mann. Porky was a long-time member of the Club as well as a tremendous supporter and booster of South Muskoka.

Teams can have only 1 player with an index below 10.0 and the aggregate handicap index for the team must be at least 40.0. One non-member per team is permitted with a green fee payable, and a valid index is required.

Dinner after play is your choice of Steak or Burger buffet and there will be a great prize table for each Division. Sign up today in the lounge or by calling the Pro Shop or Office.

2006 Mixed Net Better Ball

July 07, 2006 —

The 2006 Net Better Ball event is slated for Sunday July 16th at 1:00 pm. This is a mixed pairs 18 hole tournament with full handicaps applicable. Robb & Terri Watson are expected back to defend the title they won in last year's inaugural event.

A light lunch will preceed play and a delicious turkey dinner will be served after, along with the prize presentations.

Non-members who are on our wait list or are holders of 2006 green fee passes are eligible to enter this event. Any non-member who wishes to enter should contact Ron in the Pro Shop to establish handicap criteria, as a valid index will be required for the tournament.

Tennessee Scramble Time

June 22, 2006 —

The Tennessee Scramble is set for Saturday July 8th. This event sees teams of 3 players drawn at random during lunch, and then an 18 hole scramble follows. A BBQ dinner and prizes will complete the day. There will be Mens Ladies & Junior Divisions in the event.

This year the event will be open to people on our membership wait list, and to purchasers of 2006 green fee ticket packs. A twilight green fee is applicable for these players and we look forward to seeing many new faces.

The Tennessee Scramble is always a fun-filled event and it is a great way to play with members you might not otherwise meet. Each team will have an "A", "B", and "C" player to ensure competitive balance.

Special Note: The first and fifth people to e-mail General Manager Al Helmer and name the state bird of Tennessee will win free entry into this event (sorry no prize substitutions!).

2006 Shiers Better Ball

May 31, 2006 — The Bills from Hunstville, Muckler and Lang, will begin defence of their Shier's Better Ball title on Saturday June 3rd and they will tee it up against a strong field as usual. Second place finisher John Handrigan is back with partner to be determined and he seems intent on unseating Lang & Muckler as champs.

The Shier's Better Ball is one of the most hotly contested championships at South Muskoka each year, and this year's event promises to be better than ever. Stay tuned for updates throughout the weekend. The Club extends sincere thanks to title sponsor A. W. Shier Insurance Brokers Ltd. for their continued strong support of this event.

Beeson & Fay Square Off for Early Bird Title

May 11, 2006 —

Last year they had to settle for a tie but this year Brian Beeson and Ken Fay will be looking to decide the title of Early Bird Champion once and for all, as they lead the field for the 2006 tournament, again sponsored by RJ's Hair Studio Inc. Junior Champions David Lawson and Katie Broere are also expected back to defend their titles. The Ladies Division crown will be up for grabs this year as reigning champ Eva Kovacs has since moved into the professional ranks after gaining her CPGA accreditation.

The Early Bird is traditionally the first members' competition of the season and is in memory of PJ Marrin, an outstanding supporter of the Club over many years. The event is 18 holes of stroke play with a great prize table thank s to sponsor RJ's Hair Studio, plenty of net prizes, and a great buffet dinner following play. Register today in the lounge or by calling 645-9096.

May 02, 2006 —

The opening dinner for our Tuesday Ladies golf programme is set for Tuesday May 9th at the Clubhouse. Cocktails are at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:00. The committee has arranged a delicious striploin buffet and will welcome all women members both old and new, as well as non-members who are ladies day participants. For further information or to reserve please contact the Pro Shop.

Welcome Back Golf Day

April 20, 2006 —

Saturday May 13 is Welcome Back day at the club with an informal and fun day of golf starting in a 1:00 pm shotgun. This is a day for the Club to welcome our new members, and for returning members to renew old acquaintances. Golf Season Approaches

April 09, 2006 —

With snow receding daily, the South Muskoka Golf course is gradually emerging from a long but relatively kind winter. The Clubhouse is just entering shutdown for spring cleaning, from April 10 -15, and will re-open on Sunday April 16th for a sold out Easter brunch.

We aim to open for golf on Friday May 5th however this date remains entirely tentative at this time, and depends upon drying conditions in the next few weeks. On a very positive note, the early indications are that the course wintered well with minimal damage.

Spring rates of $44 for 18 holes and $22 for 9 will apply from opening day until further notice. 10 packs of green fee passes are on sale at great savings off the regular rate, until May 22nd. For more information please see the "Green Fees" pages on this site, and to order, contact the Club office at 645-4221 Ext 222.

Individuals on the wait list for golf membership are advised that the membership for 2006 has now been finalized, and letters updating all wait list positions will be mailed within the next few days.

Golf Membership Renewals

February 15, 2006 —

Membership renewal forms for the 2006 golf season were mailed to all members February 1st and 2nd. Everyone should have received these forms by now and if you have not, please contact the Club office.

Renewals are due back at the Club office by March 1st. If you plan NOT to renew, please give us a call to confirm.

In the newsletter accompanying renewal forms there are details of our spring green fee sale. Please make sure to share that information with any friends, family or neighbours who want to play their golf at South Muskoka. The new "shotgun specials" are a great deal! See our Green Fees page at this website for all details.

Busy Curling Month

February 07, 2006 —

February is a busy month of curling at the Club. The Juniors kicked off the month with the Turner Invitational, featuring Junior and Bantam aged curlers from Bracebridge, Parry Sound, & Stroud.

Next is the annual Muskoka Lakes Association Mixed Bonspiel on Friday and Saturday, the 10th & 11th. This event features very competitive curling at both South Muskoka and Port Carling Curling clubs followed up by a great dinner and dance on Saturday night. It is too late to enter this year's event as the field is full!

Two weeks later South Muskoka will be joined by the clubs in Bala, Baysville, Port Carling and MacTier in hosting the Men's Muskoka Lakes Bonspiel. This event features teams that are made of members of the five clubs and each team is encouraged to include a new or newer curler to introduce them to bonspieling and to meet curlers from these other clubs in Muskoka. For further information on this event contact Ted Gardner at 645-7383 or 645-7609.

Curling Club Members Prepare for Provincial Final

December 14, 2005 —

Today Ontario Curling Association staffer Doug Bakes conducted training seminars for South Muskoka members who have volunteered to serve as timers for the upcoming Ontario Bantam Curling Championships. The Championships, for curlers aged 14-16 years, will be held at the Club January 25th-28th.

Under the guidance of Chairman Dave Demerling the Club's event organizing committee is planning a 4 day celebration around the 56 games of the Provincial Final competition, which will feature 8 boys and 8 girls teams, made up of 64 of Ontario's best up-and-coming young curlers. Other activities will include a video dance , a modified "Hot Shots" competition, as well as sleigh rides around Bracebridge. Club members will fill a variety of volunteer positions including the role of timers. Each team is allowed just 60 minutes to complete all of the shots of their 8 ends of play, so timing is an important part of the game supervision.

Other on ice officiating will be handled by staff of the Ontario Curling Association.

For more information contact Al Helmer, Club General Manager at 645-4221 Extension 221.

Ball & Stone Returns

September 30, 2005 —

The Ball and Stone Challenge returns to South Muskoka next month after a 2 year hiatus. Considered by some to be the real championship of the Club, this event features 4 man teams in 2 flights of 8 in an 8 end skins curling game followed by a 9 hole golf scramble.

This year's Ball and Stone is sponsored by John C Smith of Modern Home Supply Carpet One, Bracebridge. John co-sponsored the original Ball n Stone Trophy with his lifetime friend, team-mate, and SMCGC member Dale "The Rocket Man" Sander. Dale cannot participate this year due to illness and his presence at the event will be sorely missed.

Because of the popularity of this event, registration will be on a first come first serve basis starting at noon on Tuesday October 4th at the Club office. Cost is $150 per team plus power cart rental which will be $7.50 per rider payable on the day of play if conditions permit cart use.

September 25th Special Events

September 25, 2005 —

Reminder to all members that the Survivor Finals will take place on Sunday the 25th at 2:00 pm. Also that day, at 4:30 pm the Shoot-Out for the season-long "Closest To" contests will be held. This new competition will feature all the winners of closest to awards from our 2005 member tournaments and promises to be a great exhibition. Spectators are encouraged, so come out and cheer your friends on to victory. Participants will be contacted, but if you think you might be in this event, you can check the members information area by the handicap computer station. The records from each event this season are there.

The last member's event of the 2005 golf season is just 10 days away!! The Finale will be held on Saturday October 1st at 1:00 pm. In this event you choose your own partner to play a two-person scramble over 18 holes. The last call for registrations is this Saturday so make sure to call the Pro Shop or sign up when you are at the Club.

2005 Brunch Schedule

September 09, 2005 —

With fall just around the corner, we have now finalized our schedule of Sunday brunches for 2005-06. We will begin on Sunday November 13th, then December 18th, January 15th, February 19th, and March 12th. We will have Easter brunch on April 16th, and wind-up our season with Mother's Day brunch on May 14th. We may need 3 seatings for these last two dates, in which case the schedule will be 10:00, Noon, and 2:00 pm. Reservations are strongly suggested as most seatings are fully booked. Our brunch remains one of the best values in Muskoka with the adult price at $16.95 and children under 12 just $8.50.

2005 Champions Weekend

September 08, 2005 —

The 2005 Club Championships will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September 17 and 18. This is the second year that we have held this event in September, in an effort to meet the needs of our many members whose work and places of business are too busy in the month of August to devote consecutive days to relaxation and fun! We hope that this change will be well-received.

The Club Championships are not just an event for the low handicappers of the Club although there is obviously a close competition between a few of our members. We utilize flights, have a number of net prizes, and will have Senior and Super Senior Divisions.

Under the sponsorship policy just adopted by the Board, our Club Champions will receive some financial assistance if they wish to represent the Club and enter the GAO or RCGA "Champion of Champions" events.

Registration deadline is Saturday September 10th .

Second Annual Par 3 Tourney

August 27, 2005 —

The second annual Par 3 Tourney will be held on Saturday August 27th with a 1:00 pm shotgun start. This tournament features a unique course layout of almost exclusively par threes, including such famous holes as "Almost Mattamy", Made in the Shade", "Twelve and a Half", and "We Ran Out of Names", not to mention our great finishing hole formerly known as "The Dirt Pile". No one would want to walk this layout, so a reduced power cart rate applies.

The tournament sends the 3 low shooters in Men's, Ladies', & Junior Divisions to a 3 hole playoff at the 18th green before all of the also-rans of the event. Accuracy and finesse are required in this event - 'gorilla golf' will not be a factor.

Will anyone best Miss Brooks' course record of 6 under 56?

Will anyone decipher the "Timmins" version of Callaway handicapping that is used for all prizes except the division champs?

Sign up, leave your driver at home, come on out on the 27th and see for yourself!!

Family Day Golf at South Muskoka

August 21, 2005 —

Sunday August 21st is the inaugural "Family Golf " Tournament at South Muskoka. This event is open to members and their parents, grandparents, children and grandchildren etc - nephews and nieces, aunts and uncles - need we say more. The family members do not need to be Club members to participate. A great lunch will be served before play and after the prize presentations players can head their own way to enjoy dinner in town, on the lake, or wherever they prefer.

The format of this event will be a modified alternate shot, so choose your partners carefully. Alternate is said to be one of the most difficult formats to play. We suggest that everyone come out to have fun.

Florida Scramble #4

August 19, 2005 —

The fourth and final Florida Scramble of the season is "Bring a Friend" night and takes place on Friday August 19th. There will be a special reduced rate for your guests - $39 includes their green fee, cart, and dinner. Call the Pro Shop to register. A note for Florida Scramblers: as the teams for these events must be balanced for handicap, this is done by computer programme on Friday. Last minute cancellations can really pose problems... so if you do have to cancel, please make sure to let the Pro Shop know by Thursday at the latest. See you on the 19th!

Greavette Takes Off in 2005

August 12, 2005 —

In its 3rd year, the Greavette Member & Guest event has sold out, a testament to the fun quotient enjoyed by those who attended in years 1 & 2. Both prior champions are expected to be in the field this year. Andy & Carol Wilson and their guests the Irvines will be defending last year's title. 2003 champs Jennifer and her partner Bob Heath will again team with Florida imports Dave & Kathy Cramer, assuming Dave has finished Jennifer's kitchen renovation in time.

We are again indebted to Bill Greavette and his partner/sons Tim and Glenn for their outstanding support of this event and we are all looking forward to a great 2 days of great golf and socializing. Practice round will start at 2:00 pm on Friday the 12th, allowing for an 8:30 shotgun start that morning for other players.

Porky's Revenge Returns

July 23, 2005 —

The 2005 Porky's Revenge Scramble takes place Saturday July 23rd with a 1:00 pm shotgun start. This event honours the memory of the late George "Porky" Mann, a long-time member and a great supporter of the Club. The golf is a four person scramble with one allowed to be a non-member. Only 1 player may have an index below 8 and the total team index must be at least 36. There is still room for more entries, so contact the Pro Shop ASAP if you are interested.

The Pepsi Tour returns to South Muskoka on Thursday July 21. Players in a variety of age divisions will compete for their respective clubs. Spectators are also certainly welcome and we guarantee you will see some fine young golfers giving it their best on our course.

The Pepsi Tour is a long-standing skills development programme for the Junior golfers of several Muskoka and Georgian Bay clubs. Come on out and watch the fun!

Florida Scramble #2 & Mixed Net Better Ball

July 15, 2005 —

The second mixed scramble is slated for Friday July 15, so register now and avoid the last minute rush. 18 hole division available by tee times from 2:30 pm and earlier. The meal will be ready as groups finish, with the 9 hole 5:00 pm shotgun players all expected back to the clubhouse by 7:30 at the very latest. The format will be interesting as usual, and a great light dinner is promised by the kitchen staff.

The following Sunday is the spouses (or otherwise mixed) 2 player Net Better Ball. This is a new event that will have everyone playing off their full handicap - sandbaggers/baguettes beware! Seriously now, entries welcome from couples and from singles who will be matched up if needed.

Tennessee Scramble Time

July 01, 2005 —

The next members' event on the calendar is the ever-popular Tennessee Scramble a.k.a the Selective Shot, which takes place on Saturday July 9th. Three person teams, balanced for handicap, are selected at random during the light lunch which preceeds play. Teams then tackle the course in a wide open scramble format with a shotgun start at 1:00 pm.

The sign-up sheet is in the usual location beside the handicap computer and please remember, you must be in the clubhouse at noon on the day of play to be in the tournament! A BBQ dinner follows, and prize presentations. There will be Divisions for Men, Ladies, and Juniors. Call the Pro Shop for any additional information. There is a prize awaiting the first person (who will be playing in the tournament) to call the Club office and name the state bird of Tennessee.

Buick Scramble Time

June 25, 2005 —

the 2005 Buick Scramble qualifier is on Saturday June 25th. South Muskoka Hosts CJGA

June 10, 2005 —

On June 11 and 12 South Muskoka will host the Lipton Brisk Canada Cup Team East Qualifier, with a highly competitive field of Juniors attempting to qualify for the national final later this season. This is one of three qualifiers to make up the East team which will then battle their Western counterparts in a Presidents/Ryder Cup format.

South Muskoka has hosted a CJGA event for several years now, with Club members playing their weekend games in the early morning, before turning the course over to the Junior set for the afternoon. There will be some very talented young players, and spectators are more than welcome. Spectators may walk or rent power carts to ride if they wish (cart paths only please).

Several Junior members of the Club will be competing as well. Come on out and cheer them on! Play starts at 1:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday.

Take - A - Kid to the Course Week

June 09, 2005 —

This year's Kids Golf week, sponsored by the National Golf Course Owners' Association, is July 4th-10th. At South Muskoka, children under 16 who are accompanied by an adult will be able to golf for free on either Monday July 4th or Sunday July 10th. The NGCOA will also be conducting a lucky draw with clubs and bags for both adults and kids, plus a grand prize of a fabulous family golf vacation at Panorama Mountain Village Resort, in Alberta.

South Muskoka has already launched its Junior Golfers green fee rate for the 2005 golf season, where kids pay only their age to play on either Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday, after 3:00 pm. We want our course to be an affordable place for youth to learn the skills and etiquette of golf. We encourage our members to help our young guests learn to enjoy the game and enjoy the challenge of South Muskoka C&GC. See you during "Bring A Kid to the Course" week.

2005 Shier's Better Ball

June 01, 2005 —

The 2005 Shier's will be upon us soon, taking place June 3-5 at the Club. This is a great weekend of golf with practice rounds on Friday, followed by 36 holes of two-man net better ball play. The field will be divided into three flights after Saturday's first round.

Returning players will have some adjustments to make, given recent strategic changes to some key holes on the course. Mike Rowe and partner John Murphy are expected to be back to defend their Low Gross title, along with Shean Andresson and Steve Gjumlin who captured the A Flight Net honours in 2004.

We are indebted to Adam Shier and Shier's Insurance Brokers Ltd. for their on-going support of this annual event. Thank you Adam and good luck to all participants.

2005 PJ Marrin Early Bird

May 28, 2005 —

Course Opening

April 17, 2005 —

We are aiming to open the golf course for play on Friday May 6th. To date it appears the course has wintered well. The ground is drying rapidly, and in fact we could actually use some rain, as could most of Muskoka which is already under a partial burning ban. Rain would also help get rid of the final patches of snow which are lingering in shaded areas.

2005 Sportsmen's Fast Approaching

March 07, 2005 —

With an early Easter weekend this year, the 2005 Sportsmen's Bonspiel will begin on Friday April 1. Drawmaster Jay Houston is seeking the last few teams to round out the field of 24 for the most competitive men's event of the South Muskoka curling season.

After a 3 game round robin, the top 16 teams will play in a single knock-out format on Sunday, with a chance at one of four trophies - from sponsors Muskoka Mechanical Services, the Town of Bracebridge, Labatt Breweries and Gagnon's Your Independent Grocer.

For further information contact Al Helmer at 645-4221 Ext 221, or Jay Houston at 645-1417.

Men's Muskoka Lakes Bonspiel

February 17, 2005 —

Thursday February 17th is the first day of competition in this year's Mens Muskoka Lakes bonspiel. The event originated many years ago as a way to have friendly competition between teams from clubs throughout Muskoka. Games will be played over three days at Bracebridge, Baysville, Port Carling, MacTier and at the newly renovated Bala club.

Players/teams must be from the Muskoka clubs and should include a new or newer curler, as a way of continuing to build interest in the sport throughout our region.

This event is a great way to meet new people in the area, to renew old acquaintances, and to introduce your new curler to bonspieling. Contact organizer John Acton for inquiry or assistance.

Our famous Sunday brunches will be held again this winter. The first date is October 17th, followed by November 7th and 28th, then December 19th. 2004 Members Championships

September 09, 2004 — September 18 and 19 are the dates for this year's Members' Champions Tournament. This is an opportunity for you to round up your usual foursome and challenge them, or other groups, in a 36-hole stroke play event. Senior and Super Senior categories should be included based on last year's registrations.

While we will honour our low gross shooters in each category as Club Champions, this event is for golfers of all levels of ability - it is about fun, sportmanship and friendly competition. Normal full handicaps apply with the majority of prizes awarded on a net basis.

A delicious roast beef buffet dinner will follow play on Saturday.

The sign-up sheet is in the lounge. More information may be obtained by calling the Pro Shop at 645.9096.

Tagwagi 2004

September 09, 2004 — The Club is proud to host Tagwagi 2004 - "A Gathering of Friends". The event is full, so it is too late to make it this year, but make sure you put this one on your schedule for next year (September 9th & 10th, 2005). Tagwagi is an annual Muskoka fall open tournament, with a history dating back over 30 years. The special volunteers who contribute their time make Tagwagi one of the best golf weekends of the season.

2004 Greavette

August 14, 2004 — The 2nd Annual Greavette, a mixed Member & Guest event, promises to be just as much fun as the inaugural tournament last year. Registration forms are available in the Pro Shop, and returnees will be re-booking prior to July 15th. Even with all groups returning there will be room for new entries. This is a great way to host friends, family or colleagues at the Club. The practice round is on Friday August 13 (we are NOT superstitious here) and the tournament round follows on Saturday the 14th. See you there !

Special Florida Scramble

August 09, 2004 — The fifth and final Florida Scramble this season on Friday August 20th will be a special version with guests eligible. The entry fee for members remains $15, and guests are just $40. Carts are optional and extra for both. The format will be "Lucky 3" - a secret not to be disclosed until play - and a light roast beef dinner will follow. You can make up your own foursome of members and guests or any combination, but you should have a guest in your group. As always you may also simply register as a single or couple and you will be placed on a team. Sign up by calling the Pro Shop at 645-9096.

1st Annual Par 3 Tourney

August 07, 2004 — August 7th will see a completely new South Muskoka course layout as we conduct the first ever Par 3 Tournament. While the layout for the day is almost finalized, the Committee would like to officially respond to the rumour circulating that the first hole will play from #1 tee to #9 green - Golf Committee Chair Jay Houston :" The course will definitely have a unique layout for this event, but at this time we are still considering all of our options. Playing directly over the arena is not something we would normally encourage, although I have seen Al Helmer do it - but then he was hitting from #9 bunker, not #1 tee. "

Stay tuned !!

The Skins Game Returns

August 05, 2004 — The South Muskoka Canadian Tour Skins Game and Exhibition returns again this year on Monday August 30th. Our own Brennan Webb will square off against the Chris Brigade - returnees Chris Wisler and Chris Locker, joined by Chris Greenwood and Chris Wall. Go figure.

This event is a great experience for our junior members who have the opportunity to see these highly skilled pros, and serve as caddies, scorers, spotters or just fans, and attend the clinic and exhibition on the first tee after play. A BBQ will follow for the players and junior members.

Title sponsor Point-to-Point Communications is again on board and we are grateful for their strong support. This year they are joined by presenting sponsors Muskoka Containerized Services and Northland Truck Centre, thanks to the commitment of Al Hussey and SMC&GC member Doug Nelson. The event also receives support from a number of other local companies. Thanks to all.

Club members and the public are invited to attend - the 9 hole skins event tees off at 3:30. There is no admission charge, and power carts will be available to rent for those who prefer not to walk. Any members wishing to serve as marshalls should contact Ron Webb.

Seniors' "Fall" Classic

August 05, 2004 — Need more evidence that our early closure is forcing some strange scheduling?? The traditional Seniors Fall classic will be held on Thursday August 26th. There really wasn't a better date in the usual September time frame. While the date is less than ideal, this has been a popular event and the committee felt this August date was better than the alternatives. 18 holes of inidividual stroke play will be followed by a delicious dinner and ceremonies. Depending on demand there may be a Super Seniors category within the event. Contact the Pro Shop for all details.

Porky Strikes Back

July 24, 2004 — Have you organized your team for Porky's Revenge? This popular scramble event is scheduled for Saturday July 24th, and honours the memory of George "Porky" Mann, one of our most fun-loving members and a great supporter of the Club. Teams may include 1 non-member with a recognized handicap index. Contact the Pro Shop for all details.

The Buick is Back

July 17, 2004 — The Buick Scramble returns to South Muskoka this year. After a few years of difficult logistics and far away playdowns (Ottawa!?) the programme has been revamped, and South Muskoka will again participate. The national sponsorship is augmented by strong support from local dealer Bill Greavette of Greavette Pontiac Buick Cadillac.

Our qualifier will take place on July 17th. Four player teams of any combination of men and women will play a straight scramble for the South Muskoka berth in the regional playdown, to be held week of July 26th. The entry fee is $15 per player, and the winning team will have their $100 per player regional cost covered by the tournament committee.

Teams will play with a modified team handicap outlined in the Buick Scramble rules, posted in the clubhouse. A team may have only one player with a handicap less than 8.0. See the rules sheets for complete details, and enter your team with the Pro Shop.

Take A Kid to the Course 2004

July 05, 2004 — South Muskoka will again join with other members of the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) to sponsor the national "Take a Kid to the Course Week" during July 2004.

Kids can play free July 5, 8 or 9 after 2:00 pm, with free range balls and pull carts also provided. Green fees for accompanying adults will be reduced by 50%.

What a great way to introduce children to the game of golf. In addition, kids (under 16 years of age) participating will be eligible for a special draw to win great prizes.
